Matthew’s take on discipleship is that disciples are close companions of Jesus. In fact, the very heart of discipleships is to stay close to Jesus. Disciples also understand and obey the teachings of Jesus, not because they’re particularly bright or capable, but because Jesus is with them. Matthew also portrays the disciples as realistic examples, who experience both successes and failures. Finally, disciples are Jesus’ partners in ministry, who share the calling to make more disciples.

This passage is about greatness. Jesus says if you want to be great, then you must be a servant. Notice he doesn’t say you must serve. Serving is what you do: helping others, meeting a need, providing care – these are all things God wants you to do.
