The word of life is a message about life. It answers the question, Where do I find significance, meaning, peace, hope, healing, belonging?
This question is a question everyone of us have tried to answer. Some of us have tried to find it in our work. Some of us have tried to find it in our family. Some of us have tried to find it in our accomplishments. Some of us have tried to find it in what others think of us.
But the reality is, people can search all their lives and never find what they’re looking for.
And that’s why John is writing this letter. He wants to tell people, This is where you find life. This is where you find what you’re looking for.
We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life… (1 John 1:3, 5:11-12)
You see, life isn’t found in a thing. Life is found in a person; it’s found in Jesus the word of life. And we can have this life when we have a relationship with God through Jesus. We can have this life when we have relationships with other believers through Jesus. We can have this life when we receive our new identity as beloved children of God, as members of God’s family and as agents of his kingdom mission.
