NEISHA BAKSH
My journey began in my parents’ home, even though I didn’t realize it at the time, as Pastor Jeremy pointed out to me! My dad was Muslim and my mum believed that myself and my brothers should learn about Islam, the Muslim religion. I was taught to pray in Arabic, the language of the Quran, the Muslim holy book. We were told that Arabic was too difficult a language to learn, so we read and prayed without literally understanding the words we were saying.
As I continued to pray into my 30’s, I began to think about my prayers, my communication with God, and the fact that I did not literally know what I was saying.
I began to search for answers, having discussions with various people, which eventually led me to a Christian bookstore. I bought a few different books, including the New Testament. When I read about Jesus, my heart was filled with the stories of His teachings and the miracle of His love, and my eyes were filled with tears. I was overcome with emotion by what Jesus did to save us all. Truly understanding that He sacrificed His life for mankind, filled me with His love and in that moment I knew that the right path was to follow Him.
I have since accepted Jesus into my heart and into my life.
I am taking the next step to become baptized because I want to publicly declare that I have invited Jesus into my life and that I am ready to live my new life in Christ.
I am thankful to all of my family and friends, particularly to my partner John, for encouragement, love and support during my journey. Also to Meagan and Jeremy for introducing us to Cornerstone. And of course, to our family here at Cornerstone.
For the Bible says in 1 Corinthians:
For we were baptized by one Spirit into one body – whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free – and we were all given one spirit to drink.
We are God’s Family, The Church.
Thank you.
