Gillnet

Gillnets are one of the major culprits contributing to bycatch, harming marine life, and driving species into extinction.

What are Gillnets?

Gillnets are nets that resemble a wall in the ocean meant to catch fish by their gills. Gillnets can be anchored to buoys or drifting out at sea.

Why are Gillnets Harmful to Marine Life?

These nets are not only very “effective” in catching targeted fish, but other untargeted marine animals too. The design of gillnets makes it extremely difficult for untargeted marine life to avoid entanglement leading to high bycatch rates. Animals such as whales, sharks, dolphins, turtles, pelicans, and stingrays are victims of gillnet bycatch.

Did You Know

Some scientists estimate that the ratio of gillnet bycatch is 7:1! (For every 1 targeted fish, 7 untargeted marine animals become entangled)

Bycatch: a fish or marine animal that is caught unintentionally while commercially fishing for another target species
