  • Prayers to Prepare for Sunday Worship

The following collection of prayers is offered to help you prepare your heart for a Sunday worship service. Select and pray some of these prayers each week on either Saturday night or Sunday morning before church. Most of these prayers are written in the first person (“I/me”), but you can use them as a basis from which to pray for other worshippers as well.

  • The Divine Hours (Daily Office)

The "Daily Office" is an ancient spiritual discipline whereby set prayers are offered at specific intervals throughout the day, using a specially designed prayer book. While this practice is unfamiliar to many contemporary Christians, it has deep roots in scripture and Christian tradition. The goal of this practice is to develop a set rhythm of prayer throughout the day that allows us to remain more consistently aware of and open to God's presence in our lives. Some people who had previously been accustomed only to praying spontaneously have discovered great spiritual refreshment by adding the rich, traditional prayers of the daily office to their prayer rhythms.

The Divine Hours by Phyllis Tickle is a compilation of daily office prayers for specified times of the day, and can be used by individuals or groups. For each day of the year, it includes morning, midday, vespers (evening) and compline (bedtime) prayers. The above link takes you to an online version of The Divine Hours as it appears on the website of Vineyard Church Ann Arbor.

  • Spiritual Warfare Prayers

The Bible is clear and unapologetic in its assertion that this world is influenced by by unseen evil beings- Satan and his demonic minions. These malevolent spiritual forces are fiercly opposed to God and His agenda for this world. Until Jesus comes again and puts an end to the devil and his forces once and for all, Christians should expect and be prepared for spiritual warfare. God gives us all the spiritual authority, armour and weaponry we need to stand victorious again the schemes of the devil. This handout contains two prayers to help you put on the armour of God and take authority over the enemy in the name and power of Jesus Christ.

  • Practicing Christ's Presence at Work

"Practicing the Presence of God" is an ages-old Christian prayer discipline that involves learning to be attentive and responsive to God not just during designated prayer times, but throughout the ordinary moments of your day. We have prepared a simple guidebook called "A Week of Faith @ Work: Practical Ideas for Practicing Christ's Presence @ Work." The guidebook gives a number of helpful exercises and ideas to help you do your workday with Jesus, and to bring His presence to those you work with.

  • Daily Prayer for Freedom

This is a powerful daily prayer written by John Eldredge, a well-known Christian author and speaker. The prayer is Trinitarian in structure (addressed to the Father, Son and Holy Spirit), and claims the different aspects of Christ's work for us (crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension). It also takes seriously the reality of spiritual warfare. The prayer is thoroughly rooted in scripture, and is well-worth praying every day.
